Woods Hole Cantata Consort Program 2012
J. S. Bach Cornucopia
Our 2012 program is highly diverse in both program and performers:
-
Compositions for two different types of flute: a Trio Sonata for Baroque flûte à bec (recorder), played by Jan Elliott, with David Gable, violin, (our Concertmaster,) and Luke Krafka, cello; and selections from Bach’s Suite #2, featuring soloist Jelle Atema on the transverse flute. Cathy Bonnett, our skilled accompanist, will provide continuo.
-
The Woods Hole Cantata Consort will present three sacred choral selections: the Kyrie and Cum Sancto Spiritu from the Mass in F and Dona Nobis Pacem from the B-minor Mass.
Baritone Philip Lima is well known to Falmouth and Woods Hole audiences. He will appear again with the Woods Hole Cantata Consort this season. Philip's performances regularly are marked by critical praise: “His singing was glorious” (The Boston Globe) – “vibrant baritone and a commanding resence” (Cleveland Plain Dealer) – “keen musicianship along with total dramatic intention.” (Opera News ONLINE).
Philip has sung a wide array of leading operatic roles, including world premieres, for the international Kurt Weill Festival in Dessau, Germany; Lyric Opera Cleveland; Opera Theater of Pittsburgh; Opera Columbus; El Paso Opera; Boston Academy of Music and Opera Boston; Handel & Haydn Society; Granite State Opera; Cape Cod Opera; and Boston’s Prism Opera and Opera-by-the-Bay.

In concert, Mr. Lima has appeared as soloist with the Daejeon (Korea) Philharmonic Orchestra; the National Philharmonic of Ukraine; Boston Ballet; and more than forty orchestras and concert series across the United States. Mr. Lima’s performance of Schubert’s Winterreise with pianist Beverly Orlove was described by The Boston Phoenix as one of Boston’s “Unforgettable Classical Events of 2005.”
Mr. Lima is a native of New Bedford, MA, and an alumnus of Yale University. He studied at the Tanglewood Music Center and with Richard Conrad.
Soprano Joan Kirchner performs widely on and off the Cape as a soloist for oratorio, opera and recital repertoire, from medieval works to the American Songbook. She is a favorite with Woods Hole Cantata Consort audiences and has sung with the Handel & Haydn Society, Masterworks Chorale, Chorus North Shore, Toronto's Tafelmusik Chamber Choir, and a variety of venues on the Cape.
She was soloist with the Chatham Chorale in an enthusiastically reviewed
concert last April. Her interest in early music has led to work with such leading names as Ton Koopman, Nicolas Harnoncourt, and Gustav Leonhardt. On Cape she is a co-founder of the Renaissance group OYEZ!
A native of western New York state, Joan holds two bachelor's degrees from Houghton College, one in Church Music and another in Business Administration. She earned a master's degree in Church Music and Organ Performance from Indiana University, and also studied at the Eastman School of Music. She has served churches in Indiana, North Carolina, Nantucket, and the Cape, and teaches voice, piano, flute, and organ at her home studio in Brewster.
